Cherry
Cherry is moderate in hardness and strength with a fine to medium grain pattern. Cherry will darken in a short period of time. When ordering your door, understand it will be lighter in color than a sample block. The age of the color block will determine how much lighter. In addition, this sample does not display a true picture of the characteristics of the wood but only the basic color tone. Cherry has wide variations in grain and can contain some white areas that, even when stained, will be lighter than the basic red color.

Clear Alder
Alder is a soft wood, known for its straight grain and even texture. Its color can range from light red to reddish brown. Alder dents easily and having softwood and hardwood characteristics, will absorb excess stain creating dark areas but also absorb minimal stain creating light areas. This variance is not considered a defect. Alder may display pin knots, grain fuzz and mineral streaks.

Clear Pine
Pale yellow with deep yellow to reddish-brown heartwood. Straight grained, uniform texture. Light; soft; works easily but resin exudation can be problematic. Stain control is recommended.

Hickory
Hickory is sought after by those desiring unpredictable grain patterns and vast differences in color. The colors in Hickory can range from white to reddish or dark brown and will appear randomly giving it a calico appearance. Hickory is extremely hard with a high shock resistance. Mineral streaks appear naturally and are not considered defects. Burls, water stains and sound knots can also be be a characteristic. Hickory lends itself to lighter stains that accentuate the color variations contained naturally in the wood. Darker stains will tone these variations somewhat.

Knotty Alder
Knotty Alder will contain natural sound defects and possess all inherent characteristics of Alder. Minimal color or grain matching is done to preserve strong character. Characteristics that will be represented are mineral streaks, natural color variations, grain variations and sound knots. There will be a random blend of knots and burls. The amount, size and placement of natural characteristics will vary, and the consistency (or lack of) is not considered cause for replacement.

Maple
Maple is a smooth, even grained hardwood that is predominantly off-white in color and more uniform than other hardwoods. Mineral streaks appear naturally and are not considered defects. The ends of the stiles and the cross grain profile in the raised panel will be much darker than the rest of the door. In addition doors can be different colors. This is not considered a defect but desired by those wanting a “rustic” look.

Natural Birch
Birch is a smooth, even grained hardwood that is predominantly off-white with some brown variation giving it a calico appearance. Birch cabinets with a wiping stain will not be consistent in color. The ends of the stiles and the cross grain profile in the raised panel will be much darker than the rest of the door. In addition, the face frame, doors, and drawer fronts can be different colors. This is not considered a defect but desired by those wanting a “rustic” look.

Paint Grade Poplar
Paint Grade Poplar is a smooth, even grained hardwood that may contain: narrow staves, sapwood, heartwood, and all other natural characteristics commonly found within this species. This grade is specifically intended for a painted finish and is significantly harder than other paint-grade woods. Skins and panels may be made from engineered wood products.

Red Oak
Variations in color and graining of Oak wood are commonplace some characteristics may include mineral streaks, ray flecks and pin knots. The color and grain variations add to the beauty of Oak wood.

Rustic Beech
Rustic Beech will vary in color tones from light tan to reddish brown, creating some color variation when finished. Rustic Beech will also have pin knots, mineral streaks and sap streaks.
- Characteristics include pecks, mineral streaks, and burls
- Knots may be present on the doors and drawers
- Distinct changes from light to dark wood grain
- Dramatic, rugged appearance

Rustic Hickory
Rustic Hickory is sought after by those desiring unpredictable grain patterns, dark mineral streaks, knots, and vast differences in color. The colors in Rustic Hickory can range from white to reddish or dark brown and will appear randomly in frames, doors, and drawer fronts. Darker stains will tone these variations somewhat. Rustic Hickory is extremely hard with a high shock resistance. Knots will vary in size and appear randomly.

Rustic Maple
Rustic Maple is a strong heavy wood with a tight, uniform grain pattern and a smooth surface. Characteristics include burled grain, pin knots, and caramelizing. Maple varies in color from nearly white to yellow, pink, light purple and slightly reddish brown. Rustic Maple shares the same attributes as Maple, and features a random blend of natural characteristics that occur much more frequently than in Maple.

Rustic Red Oak
Variations in color and graining of Rustic Red Oak wood are commonplace and Koch and Company will not be responsible for color or graining variations between the sample blocks and the complete order. The color, knots and grain variations add to the beauty of Oak wood.

Sapele
Sapele is fine to medium texture, with uniform to interlocking grain, ranging from straight to wavy or curly. Irregularities in the grain often produce highly attractive figures such as fiddleback or mottle. Sapele polishes to a high luster, with excellent working and finishing characteristics.

Stain Grade Poplar
The sapwood of Poplar is creamy white and may be streaked, with the heartwood varying from pale yellowish brown to green. The green color in the heartwood will tend to darken on exposure to light and turn brown. Poplar may have small sound knots & burls as well as slight mineral streaks. Dark stains are best for the stain grade Poplar.
